National Tell a Story Day

for National Tell a Story Day today, April 27 — Everyone has a story, or a story to tell — Homer Laughlin with members of the Congressional Irrigation Committee and guests. (Los Angeles Herald, June 13, 1905)

While living in California, Homer was active, and held prominent positions in several organizations, and became widely known for his civic enterprise and patriotic enthusiasm.

Homer and Cornelia Laughlin traveled a great deal. On a trip to Los Angeles, CA, Homer realized the potential for growth and development of the city, and by 1894 he had purchased property in downtown Los Angeles.

In 1897, Homer sold his East Liverpool property and pottery interests, and moved his family to Los Angeles. Homer purchased 35 acres near Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave., and spent more than $100,000 in improving the tract, later known as Laughlin Park, by planting thousands of shrubs and trees. (Numerous celebrities have owned or lived in Laughlin Park over the years — W.C. Fields, Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, Deanna Durbin, Carole Lombard, Ramon Novarro, Cary Grant, Randolph Scott and more recently Brad Pitt, Nicholas Cage, Diane Keaton, Lily Tomlin, Dermot Mulroney, and Lee Horsley.)
